A Cuban passenger's suitcase is stolen at Havana airport.
The 'José Martí' International Airport has been the subject of numerous complaints of luggage theft.
A Cuban passenger who arrived at the ‘José Martí’ International Airport in Havana at the end of last October reported that one of the two suitcases he was carrying was stolen at that air terminal.
The affected individuals recounted what happened to journalist Alberto Arego, who spread the story on his social networks, along with a video in which the Cubans confronted an airport worker, and this person indicated that they should bring up the issue with the airline.
The passenger’s daughter-in-law told the reporter that her father-in-law arrived in Cuba on October 25, 2023, on Delta airline flight 1789. The Cuban was carrying two suitcases, each weighing 49 pounds, and one of them never emerged.
“When it came time to collect his suitcases, only one appeared. At that moment, after so much searching, the claim is made to the relevant offices and they tell us that in 24 hours they will give us an answer about what happened. This afternoon we went to this office and the general supervisor Emmanuel tells us that the claim has to be made in Miami at Delta airline”, the woman told the journalist.
“The information we have is that the suitcase arrived at our airport, but here it got lost. I don’t understand how this could happen. Where is the work of the baggage handler and where is the security of the passengers? What these airport workers have on their foreheads is the dollar sign”, added the source.
The affected parties assign all responsibility to the airport workers, whom they blame for stealing the suitcase, considering the long history of complaints by Cubans about stolen or opened suitcases to take possessions at that air terminal.
“How much fabrication, theft, abuse, and fraud by these people. They do not value the sacrifice and work of our relatives. In this country, we live like vipers and scum. Where is the security of the passengers? It’s all a plot. We demand an answer. We must not allow any more abuse of power. They treat us like trash”, the woman complained.
This December, two workers from the luggage department at Terminal 3 of the ‘José Martí’ International Airport were detained for stealing belongings from the luggage of travelers arriving in the country.
The news was spread by the Facebook profile El Cubano Fiel, linked to the Ministry of the Interior (Minint). It was detailed that officers from the Technical Department of Investigations (DTI) carried out an operation at the place, which resulted in the finding that two workers had several objects in their possession that had been reported as stolen from the luggage. For this reason, the involved parties were arrested and face charges of theft.
